![]() ![]() The ten competitors in the Sunbearer Trials are usually Gold, not Jade semidioses. ![]() ![]() Sadly, there must be a winner and there must be a loser, otherwise the world will come to an end. ![]() The winner of the trials will be given the special honor of carrying the light of the Sun to the temples in Reino del Sol for the next ten years, while the loser (the one who comes in last place) will be sacrificed, with their body melting into an elixir that will provide safety and protection for the next ten years. Ten eligible competitors, all semidioses (half human and half god) between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, are chosen by Sol based on their worthiness. These special games are dedicated to Sol, the Sun God, and are essential to replenish the sun’s power and to keep the world safe from evil Obsidian gods and monsters locked within celestial prisons among the constellations. The Sunbearer Trials have been happening every decade for thousands of years. This YA novel is geared for 13 to 18 year-olds, but I loved reading it as an adult. The Sunbearer Trials is a duology (two books) and this first installment is non-stop heart-pumping adventure that you will have a hard time putting down. Aiden Thomas, bestselling YA author of Cemetery Boys (2020) delivers a dazzling, magical dystopian Mexican-inspired fantasy tale. ![]()

![]() ![]() This review is also available on Goodreads. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a raw, emotional Dark Romance. Still Beating is a story of strength and survival. I loved watching them coping with life after trauma which made it especially hard given their situation. But I’m glad it didn’t because the rest of the story gave it weight with a good dose of angst and emotions. The second book was Aggro by Coralee June and Carrie. I’ve also never read or come across a book that has a similar plot to this. I loved the plot, writing style and most of all the relationship as it developed between the 2 main characters. This book was amazing and I can’t wait to reread it. The first 1/3 of the story was dark and I initially thought it would stay that way for a while. The first is Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann. ![]() This is rough and raw and dirty, and we’re animals clawing at each other, biting, all primal growls and desperate thrusts. ![]() ![]() Then, when her mother dies, she has no choice-she must go out to where her father owns a fabled farm, one she never remembers seeing, but that she is assured is there. Matilda’s story opens with her work in a jam factory in the late 1800s in Australia-burned, calloused fingers from trying to make ends meet, a mother who is slowly wasting away, and only one friend in her desolate world. It was a good memory-and the book proved to be just as good the second time around as the first. As soon as I started it, the wings of memory took me back to the flashing needle and yarn, and the scent of roasting veggies. ![]() The girl I was helping went ahead of me at one stage, but I found the story gripping, and recently when I thought about it again, I decided to go back and listen to the whole thing this time. ![]() The one I remember most of the different stories we listened to together was A Waltz for Matilda. I have many fond memories of sitting in the living room together, fingers busy with some crocheting, while we were transported to another land and another time.
